The author has the idea of polyrhythms right, and he explains it very well, and gives great audio examples. He also has right the idea of how to thoroughly teach polyrhythmic abilities, and enhance rhythmic dexterity.
The book provides the musician with some great new ways to think about rhythm. The problem is that the book advances too quickly to some really difficult stuff. If you sit with it for hours, and practice on your own, you can ascend its steep slope and help your rhythmic abilities. This takes a hell of a lot of patience, discipline, and work, and It would've been much easier if there were more exercises, which slowly increased in difficulty, rather than the few exercises which demand a leap in difficulty from one to the next. This book is a wonderful tool for those who are serious about musicianship. However, unlike most books which spend their lengthy breadth trying to lead you along "12 stupid-simple steps," this book spends its pages with application. You will not get anything from this book if you just want to read about polyrhythms. This book is for those who want specific practice on the subject, and "Polyrhythms: A Musician's Guide" does that very well. Scott Williams - The Funky Six

The Funky Six is the perfect book for drummers who enjoy playing in the jazz/funk/rock genre, but are stuck in a "straight 16th note rut" and would like to feel more comfortable playing triplet-based rhythms.
This book contains basic exercises to create a strong foundation, and progresses methodically to give the student the independence and fluency to musically create his or her own rhythms.
Mastering any style of playing takes time and commitment. The material in this book is no exception, faststrings.com. To become fluent with the feel of this material and the rhythmic ideas behind it is a learning process. It should be approached with patience and the understanding that results do not happen overnight. Plan on working on this material as a regular part of your practice schedule. With frequent practice and patience, you will find your ability and understanding of these patterns and ideas will deepen, and you will ultimately become quite comfortable playing them.

Ed Roscetti - Drummer's Guide To Odd Meters

This approach helps the student and professional drummer to develop a library of rhythmic ideas for grooving, turnarounds to outline phrases, and soloing. I highly recommend Ed's book and CD.

Vic Firth - Snare Drum Method: Book 2 Intermediate

Also included are The 26 Rudiments of Drumming plus a section on bass drum and cymbal playing.
There are two duets in the book to be played by the instructor and student together. These duets offer the student the opportunity to concetrate and apply his techniques while performing with his teacher who is playing an entirely different part. This helps establish both musicality and musical independence.
In this book we are trying to develop a musical snare drummer: one who has control and fast articulate hands as well as a sense of rhythmic phrasing, interpretation, and concept of sound. He must treat the instrument as a rhythmic potential capable of countless musical subtleties. The book is presented as the second step toward the development of this objective.

Gary Chester - The New Breed
Gary Chester was one of the busiest studio drummers of the '60s and '70s and played on hundreds of hit records. His systems have been used and endorsed by drummers such as Kenny Aronoff, Danny Gottlieb, and Dave Weckl.
This is not just another drum book, but rather a system that will help you develop the skills needed to master today's studio requirements. By working with this book, you'll improve your reading, concentraton, coordination, right and left-hand lead, and awareness of the click.

John Riley - The Art of Bop Drumming

The CD included features exercise examples and play along tunes with Bob Mintzer (tenor saxophone), Phill Markowitz (piano), James Genus (bass), and John Riley (drums).
The Art of Bop Drumming has been split into 7 main sections - time playing, comping, soloing, brushes, more jazz essentials, charts, and the appendix. Every section is packed with quite a lot of detail, and there are tracks from the cd accompanying the notated examples. It's all really easy to follow, and starting with some simple exercises, it takes you step by step to some more challenging stuff.
As well as the examples, the cd has some play-along tracks with the drum part removed, so you can play the drum part with the backing band. It's great fun too!
The section on time playing includes some good pages on using the ride cymbal, bass drum, and hi-hat to keep the pulse. There are also a couple of nice pages on practing including what to practice, goals, warming up, and keeping it fun.
The section on comping is really detailed, in fact it's the bigest area covered in the book. It helps get your limbs moving independantly, covers comping with the snare drum and bass drum, and accompanying a soloist.
There are around 10 brush patterns covered, all for different tempos and time signatures, and all with pictures of the brush movments. Really good!
As for the other sections, the pages on 'more jazz essentials' covers playing the shuffle, playing in "2", 3/4 waltz, samba, 12/8 feel, and mambo. The section on charts goes over some pretty standard reading info, and the appendix has a cool 'reccomended listening' area with great players like Max Roach, Art Blakey, Roy Haines, Philly Joe Jones, Mel Lewis, and Frankie Dunlop being featured.

John Blackwell - Master Series

John performs his original compositions with a burning band: Gary Grainger (bass), Mike Scott (guitar), Corey Bernhard (keyboards). Interspersed among the performances, John touches on topics including grooving / playing in the pocket, foot technique, and showmanship, along with extensive commentary and demonstrations of the grooves and concepts that have influenced him. The three-hour DVD is divided into two main sections.
In the first section, Blackwell performs with the all-star band and then explains and demonstrates the drum parts. Not only does the master drummer discuss the way the song and groove evolved along with the specific techniques that are involved in the performance, he demonstrates the patterns at normal and slow speeds to provide students with a deeper, fuller understanding of the parts and their musical context.
The second part of the program covers topics such as playing musically, grooving and embellishing the groove without over-playing, fills and solos, showmanship and independence as well as Blackwell’s Jazz, R&B and Hip-Hop roots. Also featured: special guest Marcus Williams – John’s teacher, who leads an extensive master class segment on his amazing foot technique and soloing concepts, a PDF ebook containing transcriptions of John s grooves.

Joe Morello - Master Studies

Master Studies has been layed out with 7 sections - Accent studies, Buzz roll studies, Stroke combination studies, Control studies, Fill-in studies, Ostinato studies, and Flam studies. Once you've gotten through that, there is the Buzz roll studies section that again uses 8th notes and triplets with buzz strokes on different beats combined with accents on other notes as well.
A pretty interesting area is the Stroke combination studies section where you go from playing single to double strokes, single to double to buzz strokes and so on. There are also 5, 7, and 9 stroke roll exercises too. It all gets mixed up for a challenging workout.
If you're having trouble going from one sticking pattern to another, the Control studies section gives some good exercises to help you. As well as that, there are exercises to improve your subdivisions of time, endurance, velocity, and dynamics.
The last part of this section is the Stone "Killer", which is a tough exercise given to Joe by his teacher - George Lawerence Stone. The idea is to work each hand individually (LLLLLLLL then RRRRRRRR) then together whilst getting faster, adding accents, and playing each hand for longer and longer. It's hard work, but you'll reap the benefits. A real Killer.
Towards the end of Master Studies are the Fill-in and Ostinato studies sections which both offer a range of exercises to increase your capability and confidence. The Ostinato section is good and gives you patterns to play with one hand, while developing total freedom with the other hand at the same time.
Last of all is the Flam studies section that adds flams and accents in to the mix as well as different sticking patterns. Like the rest of the book it gives a good workout and expands the list of cool stuff you can make the sticks do.

Buddy Rich - Live in '78

Even though the video catches the band just after the departure of some key Rich players like trumpeter Dave Stahl and pianist Barry Kiener, it still features Rich's right-hand man, tenor saxophonist Steve Marcus, along with a tight-knit ensemble of players with strong soloists in all sections.
The program is a crowd-pleaser, including a Sammy Nestico swinger, a fusion pop chart (Joe Zawinul's "Birdland"), and one of Rich's two major drum solo vehicles ("Channel One Suite," the successor to "West Side Story"), on which he doesn't disappoint. Visually, the camera crew and editors are right on top of the action, intercutting long shots, close-ups, and angled shots that attentively follow the important musical developments, giving the viewer a chair right alongside the percussion phenomenon known as Buddy Rich.
The solos are closely miked and clear throughout, including the leader's solo turns, and the overall ensemble sound is good. On the other hand, the rhythmic support, including Rich's drum kit and ride cymbal, seemed excessively muffled and dampened, while the electric bass was occasionally penetrating and pinched.
Personnel: Buddy Rich: drums; Andy Fusco and Chuck Wilson: alto saxophone and flute; Steve Marcus and Chuck Wilson: soprano saxophone; Steve Marcus and Gary Pribeck: tenor saxophone; Greg Smith: baritone saxophone; John Marshall, Mike McGovern, Mark Ohlsen and Chuck Schmidt: trumpet; Glenn Franke, Dale Kirkland, George Moran: trombone; Bob Kaye: piano; Tom Warrington: electric bass.
